At times, things happen that give us hope. Help us understand that we are not alone, railing against the insanity.
On December 2 we wrote about the evils in the world the Internet has fostered. Where have all the elders gone? So I want to acknowledge and give thanks to U.S. Attorney General Michael Mukasey and representatives of the European Union. 61 people in the United States, and more than 170 people around the globe, have been arrested in Operation Joint Hammer, targeting international child pornographers. Law enforcement rescued 11 girls in the United States, ages 3 to 13, who were sexually abused by child pornography producers.
11 young girls. So sad and so despicable. The consequences for these young ladies will continue throughout their lives. Regrettably, given our legal system, far beyond the legal consequences for their abusers.
The impact of these criminals goes beyond the effect on just these young children. The lives that have been harmed and affected by these purveyors of smut, and the continuing ability of young people to view it freely on-line remain a serious concern.
Mr. Mukasey cannot change that. Only parents and those who are responsible for the placement of computers in places for public access can do so. (Someday I hope to write about computers in public libraries – check your library’s policy. Can your children access this criminal content there?).
Be an “elder” to your own children, and to other children in your community. Thank you.
