Who thinks this stuff up anyway…..?
The Wall Street Journal reports that the EPA might be ready to propose to “’slap a cow tax’ on bovines for their contribution to global warming”. It seems that cows produce too much methane gas.
Exactly how many cows are there in the world and how much gas can they possibly produce? More disconcerting is the impact that this could have on family farmers, a vanishing breed. Family farmers themselves should already be on the endangered species list.
When I was young and had to walk 5 miles (one way) to school in the snow, we passed many a herd of cows. Everyone in my community had milking cows. I am surprised I have not already died of methane intoxication poisoning. Now the herds are gone. We grew up on milk and enjoyed beef when our parents could afford it. No 35 grams of sugar-soda soft drinks – no diet soda, nor even diet Snapple. When the politically correct came to condemn milk I ignored them since I felt I would continue to enjoy it.
Then they came for the steaks and red meat. I still did nothing – said nothing. I intended to remain politically incorrect and barbeque hamburgers.
But now they have come for the cows. Why, cows? We save the whales, shelter cats and dogs, adopt hunting restrictions to make deer lawn ornaments, release bear and cougar in areas where they have not roamed for years to attack people with whom they have not interacted for years…..so why pick on cows?
Cows are naturally “green” animals. They forage, graze, and kept fields cleared of noxious weeds that trigger allergies and so create a favorable environment for herbs and forbs. Their chips are natural fertilizer to keep fields green and in fact can be burned as a renewable energy source.
Their methane emissions are as natural to them as hot air is to the politicians who would tax them.
Let’s forget about the tax on cows and impose a tax on politician’s words. After all if cow manure is an environmental hazard, isn’t all the b… s… from Washington a biohazard as well?
